Sonic Mania Review - Is It Good? | 8-Bit Eric | 8-Bit Eric
This is a review of Sonic Mania for the Nintendo Switch. Sonic Mania has been billed as a return to form for the series, it brings the series back to what made it so popular in the first place which is old-school Sonic gameplay and design.
Sonic Mania opens as Dr. Eggman once again steals a collection of powerful gems called Chaos Emeralds, and it's up to Sonic, and friends to save the day again. Yes it is basically the same tried and true story, but if it aint broken why fix it?
If you've played any of the Genesis Sonic titles, Sonic Mania is going to look and feel familiar. You will be running, jumping, spin dashing, flying, and glide thru 12 zones. You’ll see classic zones from Genesis-era Sonic games, like Chemical Plant, Stardust Speedway, alongside some brand new and great looking levels that offer lots of new gameplay mechanics to the series. Sonic Mania offers some of the best level design in the series’ history, they’re bigger, more elaborate and have tons of different paths for you to take, which increases the enjoyment and deployability of them
Sonic has a new ability, the Drop Dash, which allows him to immediately drop out of a jump and dash upon hitting the ground I didn’t find this new ability to really create much a difference, and honestly didn’t use it that much. You’ll need to conquer to collect the Chaos Emeralds and see Sonic Mania’s ‘true’ ending. Also returning are bonus stages from Sonic 3, which you’ll find at the checkpoints scattered across the zones. Some of the returning songs stick very close to the original arrangements but with slight remixes and instruments that sound amazing.
The ability to play as Sonic, Tails, or Knuckles also changes the experience and the game includes a time attack and multiplayer versus mode.On the switch, it runs like an absolute charm on the system, both docked and portable Sonic Mania never strays too far from the formula that inspired it.
