Sonic Memoir is an album of songs that I made while thinking about different times in my life, trying to capture some of the sounds and feelings, filtered through both the haze of memory and the limits of my own skills.

This was actually the first piece I made for the album. Shortly after high school, I went to a party and talked to a guy who was really into techno. He explained what the music meant to him and what things it should or shouldn't have. We listened to some examples, and he explained what he did or didn't like. For some reason, that interaction has always stuck with me.

But going on almost 20 years later, I only half remember that conversation. This song starts out trying to reconstruct what we talked about, but my own aesthetic keeps taking over. Along the way are echoes of Jlin and it wraps up with more of the Zimbabwean influence. He and I both love rhythm and repetition, but we love them in very different ways.
