Sonic the Fighters Blitz is a fangame developed by Restless Dipstick, being a 2D re-imagining of Sonic the Fighters. Originally made to practice animating consistently, this game was created using the I.K.E.M.E.N GO engine, and features hand-drawn spritework, with all eight playable characters from the original Sonic the Fighters, alongside two additional unlockable characters (mid-boss Metal Sonic and final boss Dr. Eggman, both being major antagonists from the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise) from clearing arcade mode once.
Gameplay is mostly the same as the original Sonic the Fighters, with several new additions. Your normal attacks include a Punch (P) and Kick (K) button, and barriers are also present, allowing you to block attacks as long as you have them (your amount is shown in the barrier gauge). Some attacks could break barriers, and if you run out of them from this, you are unable to block attacks for the rest of the match.
New to this game is the Smackdown (S) normal attack, which launches the opponent to the side, and Hyper Mode, which costs a single barrier, has been re-adjusted too, from (in the original game) decreasing move startup - thus making them faster - to (in this game) allowing you to cancel any attack to any other attack with little restrictions, and even enabling a "Hyper Special" - a super attack that ends Hyper Mode upon execution. Dodging (D) has been changed too - originally a sidestep, this mechanic has been turned into a spot dodge.
0:00 Opening
The opening quickly establishes the premise of this game. Here, Comeggtator (one of Dr. Eggman's robots) announces a fighting tournament where participants are given "faux-emeralds" to boost their fighting prowess, with the final match being against a secret opponent that they would have to face in order to become the tournament's winner, winning money. This intro sequence always appears not only upon opening the game (as expected), but also even if you return to the main menu by specific means (such as clearing Arcade Mode). I assume that this is due to I.K.E.M.E.N/M.U.G.E.N limitations, though.
1:11 Arcade Mode
Your chosen character then enters said tournament. Espio does so under suspicion of a grander scheme (involving Dr. Eggman), and him beating up the other contestants (and also warning Knuckles of his suspicions) is enacted in his Arcade Mode. After doing such and defeating a clone of him, Espio is forcefully warped into facing against Metal Sonic, the secret opponent, and promptly defeats him. He then finds Dr. Eggman, who confirms that the entire tournament was a successful experiment made to test the faux-emeralds, and then Espio defeats Dr. Eggman, before escaping his base (which is implied to be the Death Egg) as it self-destructs.
17:09 End screen
One final note: This game is overall a nice conversion. It lacks the infamous difficulty the Metal Sonic fight has going for it, but the combos are fun to do, if I was consistent enough to get them working. Too bad Restless Dipstick abandoned the game...
