"DongDong Never Dead Again"

Dong Dong Never Die - "东东不死传说", which roughly (and accurately) translates to "Dong Dong: The Immortal Legend" - is perhaps one of the most well-known 2D Fighter Maker 2nd games out there. Developed by a team of Chinese indie developers led by Jiangxi Dinosaur, the game would be initially released around August 2009, both online and as part of that month's "Ultra Console Game" issue, with the last official update - being version 1.6 - released two years later, during August 2011. To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the game, Dong Dong Never Die's Chinese community (in particular, hlwz5735) released a fanmade balance patch (v1.65), of which this video covers (in particular, the V1.651 update released around September 2021).

Dong Dong Never Die is a four-button fighter, with light and heavy variants of punches and kicks, in addition to two separate buttons: a roll button (4/6E), which can also be used to recover from the ground (exactly during knockdown, 4/6E) and as a command for Dead Angle Attacks (during blockstun, 6E), which serves as a guard cancel get-off-me attack). There are also Golden Rolls (4/6F), which consumes one bar of meter, is fully invincible, and can be used as a move-cancelling method, although Golden Rolls (and Dead Angle Attacks) do not work on this update specifically. Meter (of which you can have a maximum of six bars) is also used for super attacks, all of which consumes one bar.

Much of Dong Dong Never Die's charm comes from its presentation, with the game taking characters, and music from various other IPs (Mario and Ken Masters appear in this game as playable characters, and Optimus Prime appears as one of Mian Hua Tang's super attacks, for example). Digitized sprites, of which were made from the developers (and their friends and family), are also used in this game.

0:00 Intro
The intro sequence is taken from The King of Fighters '98. You don't see Shingo Yabuki appear here like in the original though, so it's automatically bad by default.

0:58 Story Mode
The backdrop of the game's story, which is explained in Story Mode's opening sequence, copies Terminator 2: Judgement Day's own premise. In the future, prior to its destruction, SkyNet sends a more advanced Terminator - Sheng Hua Nan (who is the game's final boss) - to the past, with Dong Dong (the leader of the human resistance) sending their own reconfigured Terminator to the past as a response. Anyways, during 2009, a "Street Fighter" fighting tournament took place in Guangzhou, China. However, around the final matches, a large number of contestants disappeared mysteriously, with evidence pointing towards Sheng Hua Nan. Thus, Dong Dong, (who during that time was) a policeman from the Sichuan province, sets out to compete in this tournament, investigating over what happened... This is the game's "arcade mode", where you face off against a pre-determined path of fighters. Sheng Hua Nan serves as your final opponent (with a second match against him afterwards with the help of either Terminator or Dong Dong, depending on which character you chosen).

23:35 Staff Credits
Presumably because the programmers are credited as a splash screen in the game's intro screen, here the game basically credits the actors themselves, also throwing several behind-the-scenes pictures. Pretty charming, to say the least.

26:23 Extra Battle(s)
After the credits roll, you fight (with and against) portions of the rest of the cast simultaneously (of which there are three rounds total). Unique to V1.651 is another battle (an "Extra Battle") taking place right after fighting the rest of the cast, and in Dong Dong's case, Sheng Hua Nan reappears for revenge, with SkyNet bringing in extra clones as backup. They get promptly dealt with by Dong Dong and Terminator. Afterwards, the game does a teaser of a new Streets of Rage game. Yeah, they kinda did an ad in the end. Which is funny, because their design of Blaze Fielding in that teaser closely resembles Blaze's official design in Streets of Rage 4, released years after Dong Dong Never Die. Did the designer eventually winded up working for DotEmu, or did DotEmu used the design shown here?

35:05 End screen
Nothing else to mention here. The game did remove Dong Dong's ability to double super, but at least he can still two-touch most of the playable characters, provided of course he has a bar of meter for each combo.
