Sonic the Hedgehog 2006: Last Story Part 1/2: End of the World
20So you've beaten all of the Episodes of this game, right? Sonic, Shadow AND Silver's?
This means there's actually an extra Episode left to beat that brings their stories altogether for the grand finale.
ALSO take important note: This game is so far the final fully 3D Sonic game to structure its story like this. This Rashomon Style of character perspective storytelling.

So then... to recall...
In Sonic's Episode, Sonic had just recently defeated Dr. Eggman one last time as his newest Egg Carrier was malfunctioning, and as such, rescued the kidnapped Princess Elise one last time.
In Shadow's Episode, with the help of Rouge and Omega, Shadow released his Inhibitor Rings to fight back against Mephiles and his army of clones.
In Silver's Episode, to defeat Iblis once and for all and save that future, Blaze sealed Iblis within herself, and then sealed herself in an alternate dimension, allowing Silver to finally live in a peaceful world.
Little did they, their friends and even at least one shared enemy of theirs knew at the time, this was only the beginning of the end...

Mephiles managed to survive against his battle against Shadow's Team Dark and escaped from the desert with his Purple Chaos Emerald. He failed to turn Shadow to his side, and Silver rejected his order to kill Sonic...
So Mephiles decided to take more matters into his own hands...
As Sonic and Elise were making a peaceful stroll back to Solenna's Castle Town, they were suddenly blindsided by a wall of darkness.
And that's when Mephiles put his Plan B into action... and struck through Sonic from behind!
In utter silence, the blue hedgehog then collapsed to the ground... Completely motionless...
Elise rushed over to wake Sonic up, but to know avail and no response. The reason was very clear...
From Mephiles' action... SONIC THE HEDGEHOG... HAS DIED!!!!
As Mephiles laughed at his own murder, the Princess of Soleanna could no longer hold back her tears, as much as her late father had told her to...
When Elise finally cried, Iblis was UNLEASHED! This is what Mephiles wanted this entire time! So now to move on through his plan!
He used his Purple Chaos Emerald to summon forth the remaining six to his place, regardless of where they were or WHEN they were.
Mephiles used the 7 Chaos Emeralds to fuse with Iblis, returning them to their original form.
The God of the Sun: SOLARIS
As Solaris, he then proceeded to warp all of time and space into a distorted chaos.

Very VERY conveniently, on one platform from this chaos, this gathered together several significant players: Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Shadow, Rouge, Omega, Silver from his own future (but Blaze was still gone...), Eggman (who managed to survive his Egg Carrier incident)...
...and Elise... holding onto Sonic's corpse...
All of Team Dark, Silver, and Sonic's closest friends Tails and Knuckles and ESPECIALLY AMY were devastated to see their favorite blue hero gone. Even his arch-nemesis Eggman felt distraught.
Eggman realized what was going on. Mephiles' plot this whole time was to make Elise grieve so much that she'd cry, thus releasing Iblis and allowing him to merge back with Iblis to become Solaris. Since Silver chose not to kill Sonic to pull this off, Mephiles decided to kill Sonic, himself.
At Present, it was impossible to defeat Solaris. But Silver thought there was some way to beat him across all time periods all at once. Shadow thought so, too, IF there was a way for Sonic to help them with that.
But then... Elise still felt Sonic's soul through the wind. A blue wind... somehow or another, he was still alive in spirit!
Knowing this, Silver remembered what Blaze told him, and wanted Elise to use the Chaos Emeralds to turn her thoughts to bring Sonic back to life into a power.
In order to do that, everyone besides Eggman and Elise are to travel to different locations to find those 7 Chaos Emeralds again!

The End of the World is split into 7 levels, each tackled with a different character.
Tails in Crisis City
Omega in Flame Core
Knuckles in Tropical Jungle
Silver in Dusty Desert
Rouge in Wave Ocean
Amy in White Acropolis
Shadow in Kingdom Valley
The goal for each of them is to find a Chaos Emerald. As soon as you do, you move on to the next character until you get them all.
But these levels are some of the hardest in the game, and since they're just short courses, there are no checkpoints except between characters. As time passes, they distort with wild colors, causing different rifts to open up.
Red rifts launch objects around to hurt you, but the blue ones are black holes that suck you in for instant death. They can show up RIGHT IN YOUR PATH! ARGH!
To cure the distortion and remove these rifts for a bit, hit blue eagle globes. You might not be able to clear a path until you do.
Gather the 7 Chaos Emeralds to save Sonic from death, then get ready for this game's (infamous) grand finale!
