Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has added Maria Robotnik to its character list, which implies the upcoming film will take a dark turn. The previous two live-action Sonic movies from Paramount have been predominantly light-hearted and comical, but that isn't always how things have gone in the comics, games, and TV series. Some of the storylines are downright tragic, especially when diving into Dr. Robotnik's family history. Though little is known about Sonic the Hedgehog 3, a teased new cast member hints that the upcoming film may start to touch on some of these darker topics.
A set photo from Sonic the Hedgehog 3 revealed that actor Alyla Browne has joined the established cast and will be playing a character named Maria. Though the image that Browne posted on Instagram keeps her face obscured, the name of her character is visible on her chair, making for an exciting tease. Maria Robotnik is a canon character from the Sonic video games, comics, and series, and she has significant ties to the already teased Shadow. However, given Maria's tragic end, she's a surprising addition to Paramount's Sonic movies.
In Sonic canon, Maria Robotnik is Dr. Eggman's cousin and the granddaughter of Gerald Robotnik, the genius scientist behind Project Shadow. The man had agreed to take part in the project because he believed that creating an immortal being would be the answer to saving Maria, who suffered from a terminal illness. Ultimately, Gerald was partially successful in his task, and Shadow was created. The scientifically engineered hedgehog became extremely close to little Maria, but the girl was killed by a GUN soldier when Project Shadow was shut down.
Sonic the Hedgehog2 already teased the existence of Project Shadow, and the character himself was briefly seen in the post-credits scene. Therefore, it makes sense that Maria Robotnik would be brought in for Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Unfortunately, GUN's Commander Walter is heard ordering the shutdown of Project Shadow, which begins the series of events leading to Maria's death. So, it seems that things will get pretty dark in this next installment of Paramount's Sonic movies.
Ultimately, it all comes down to how it is handled. It's possible that Browne was cast to only appear in flashbacks that would fill audiences in on Shadow's story. Therefore, Maria's death wouldn't necessarily need to be shown on screen but instead implied. Regardless, Maria's death can't be made any less sad than it is. Whether the young girl is killed in a dramatic and heartbreaking scene or simply mentioned, it's a sign that the themes of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will be a little different from its predecessors.
