Sonic Triple Trouble: Part 1: Great Turquoise Zone (Sonic)
I consider this not only the best 8-Bit Sonic platformer, but the best 8-Bit Sonic game PERIOD. While not a 1:1, it's the closest to feeling like a Genesis game.
This game's story seems to be its own interpretation of Sonic 3's story.
----------
A red guy known as Knuckles the Echidna has taken away 5 Chaos Emeralds. He is chased after by Sonic the Hedgehog, and his little buddy Miles "Tails" Prower.
Meanwhile, behind their backs, Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik had regained the 6th (extra???) Yellow Chaos Emerald for himself. Looks like he tricked Knuckles into believing that Sonic & Tails are the REAL villains. Looks like those two will have to deal with him again, as well!
But if that wasn't enough problems on their hands between Eggman and Knuckles, a 3rd entity from a different dimension was ALSO interested in taking all of the emeralds for himself...
----------
Great Turquoise feels like a more fleshed-out take on Sonic Chaos' Turquoise Hill. All of its trees have springs on the top of them, and there are even short underwater sections.
Sonic himself controls the same way, but you can now use curl into a ball for a moment after bring launched from a spring. This will be important for a bit later...
----------
Gathering the Chaos Emeralds takes more work in this game than in Sonic Chaos. First, you must grab 50 or more Rings, then you have to find and break open an Emerald Monitor. Any less than 50, and it won't work. If you have enough, you can jump into a magical warp gate that appears.
The first Special Stage is an obstacle course. You have to get through it before time runs out. Luckily, you can pick up more time as you get through the course.
At the end of it, you will encounter the 3rd big enemy of this game: Fang the Sniper (or Nack the Weasel, though he's actually a jerboa-wolf creature.
You just scare him awake, but then he'll run away. For now, just keep going to get the Blue Chaos Emerald. Getting an Emerald will just take you back to the same level you traveled from; you still need to beat it yourself, this time.
----------
The second Special Stage is a flying course that runs itself like 16-Bit Sonic 2's Special Stages. Just collect enough Rings, 80 of them, before you last too long through this area, and you'll win the course. Watch out for bombs, as they will stun you in place and keep you from moving around to get more Rings for a moment.
Afterwards, you encounter Fang, again. NOW he'll fight you as a boss, by trying to squish you with his aerobike, the Marvelous Queen. Just keep jumping on his head to destroy his Queen and make him flee, again. If you die, here, you're out of this Special Stage.
Then you can go on over and get the Red Chaos Emerald.
----------
Back at Great Turquoise, in Act 3, like in Sonic Chaos, if you take the time to look around, you may be able to get some Rings instead of having to fight a boss "naked".
This Zone's boss is the Tart Turtle. For the first phase, it floats above you while you're underwater, but you can still reach it and hit it.
After enough hits, it flies higher. Use the Spring Turtles to chase after it. This time, you have to use that air curl maneuver I mentioned before in order to hit it some more. Hitting it enough times in this phase will bring it down for good.
----------
From there, Sonic catches up to Knuckles, who somehow throws him into the next Zone by lighting the whole place on fire...
