Dark Guardian

The Dark Guardian block access to Shamar's Temple of Gaia. He seems to be the ultimate step up from the Nightmares and Deep Nightmares Sonic has been fighting this whole time and is arguably stronger than even the Big Mothers and Titans: He derives his power from an altar that he never wanders far from, which renders him practically invulnerable. The Dark Guardian is the 5th boss battle in the game, after the Egg Beetle, Dark Gaia Phoenix, the Egg Devil Day, and the Dark Moray.

Here's one boss battle that deviates a LOT compared to the Wii/PS2 version. In that version, you're fighting the Dark Guardian directly in a circular arena. The Werehog smacks him much like a standard enemy, except he's huge and carries a hammer that probably weighs as much as he does. From time to time, he'll jump up by an alter, clasp his hands above his head, and rain lightning down on Sonic.

Pretty much the only things the battles have in common between the two versions is that Dark Guardian has a hammer and he has a lightning attack. Instead, here, you fight him in an extremely unconventional way: See those three blocks placed around the field? You're supposed to push them to the blue side of the field. Doing so destroys part of the altar that gives the Dark Guardian power and will get rid of a huge chunk of his health. (Otherwise, the altar will heal him each time you knock him down, nullifying the damage you do to him.) Each time you do so, the altar will send some of its previously-sealed power to the Dark Guardian. After the first block reaches the blue goal and destroys a part of the altar, he can summon Nightmares and rain lightning down wherever he wants. After the second block reaches the blue goal, he can summon Deep Nightmares (which push the block at a faster rate) and do a charge at Sonic that leads to a particularly fast Quick Time Event. I don't know what his new techniques are after the third block gets palced and the altar is destroyed, but his whole body glows instead of just his hammer, which is...not good.

At the same time, the Dark Guardian and his minions will attempt to push the blocks over to the purple side of the field. If a block arrives at that point, nothing really happens. Sonic doesn't get a huge chunk of health out of him or anything, nor does the Dark Guardian become more powerful. He just has a longer distance to push these things. What happens if you let Dark Guardian push all three blocks to over there? Your guess is as good as mine.

Overall, this is a very easy boss battle for this point in the game. The hard part is figuring out what to do. Once you figure it out, he's nothing. Of course, doing this quickly enough to get the S-Rank is not an easy task, considering everything is designed to get in Sonic's way.
