Разработка Sonic the Hedgehog 3 началась после выхода второй части серии, в 1992 году. Изначально команда разработчиков планировала создать игру с изометрической графикой, но отказалась от этой затеи, боясь радикального изменения концепции серии. Третья часть тесно связана со своим прямым продолжением Sonic & Knuckles, так как их планировали выпустить как один большой проект, но из-за ограниченного срока разработки и высоких производственных затрат студии пришлось разделить его на две игры. The fourth platformer video game from the Sonic the Hedgehog series for the Sega Mega Drive game console, developed and released on February 2, 1994 by Sega Technical Institute, an American division of Sonic Team. According to the plot of the game, the main character Sonic the hedgehog, along with his friend Tails the fox, continue to fight against the villain Dr. Robotnik on a mystical island floating in the clouds. In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the character Echidna Knuckles appears for the first time, the guardian of the island, set up by Dr. Robotnik to confront the main characters.
The development of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 began after the release of the second part of the series, in 1992. Initially, the development team planned to create a game with isometric graphics, but abandoned this idea, fearing a radical change in the concept of the series. The third part is closely related to its direct sequel Sonic & Knuckles, as they were planned to be released as one big project, but due to the limited development period and high production costs, the studio had to split it into two games. Nevertheless, the full version of this project called Sonic 3 & Knuckles turned out to be available thanks to the "Lock-On" technology and subsequent reissues of Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
