Sony PS5 Internal Game Capture VS Atomos Ninja External HDMI Gameplay Recording Picture Quality Test
9In this video I'm comparing PS5 internal game capture footage to the same gameplay simultaneously recorded on the Atomos Ninja. Both the PS5 and the Ninja are recording in 4K/UHD at 59.94FPS (NTSC variation of 60FPS).

Extra notes:
The PS5 internal game capture uses the VP9 video codec. At 4K/UHD 59.94FPS (NTSC variation of 60FPS) the bitrate will be between 40Mb/s to 60Mb/s. This codec is an inter-frame codec using a bit depth of 8 Bit and a chroma subsample of 4:2:0.
The Atomos Ninja HDMI recording uses the ProRes 422 HQ video codec. At 4K/UHD 59.94FPS (NTSC variation of 60FPS) the bitrate will be around 1800Mb/s. This codec is an intra-frame codec (all I frame) using a bit depth of 10 Bit and a chroma subsample of 4:2:2.
The footage was edited in DaVinci Resolve Studio on my M4 Max MacBook Pro in 4K/UHD 59.94FPS (NTSC variation of 60FPS). The export for the YouTube upload was H.265 in 10 Bit 4:2:2 at a bitrate of 200Mb/s.
While 10 Bit and 4:2:2 chroma subsampling is unnecessary for the YouTube upload, as YouTube will re-encode to 8 Bit 4:2:0 chroma subsampling for all SDR (standard dynamic range) video. I have used 10 Bit 4:2:2 as elements of the source footage, from the Ninja, was recorded 10 Bit 4:2:2.
As mentioned in the video, the YouTube re-compression, as good as it is, will add extra encoding artefacts. These encoding artefacts due to the re-compression will essentially mask, or destroy, some of the fine detail in the original footage, especially with fast moving and busy scenes. This basically levels out the differences between the Ninja and PS5 footage and effectively removes some of the advantages/detail of the Ninja footage.
