I doubt our space mercenary spends much time pondering such weighty matters. After all, they could have run away, though I doubt it would have done them much good. They didn't have to stand and fight. But they did, 'cause they're pirates, and I salute their atoms spreading across the galaxy as I go collect my paycheck.

Wing Commander Privateer was released in 1993, part of the Wing Commander series but with a twist: it was an open world where you could trade goods, fight as a mercenary, or even turn to the dark side and smuggle drugs or slaves. It was one of the great games of all time, with an infamously steep learning curve. It also runs on DOS.

Privateer Gemini Gold is an open-source remake of Privateer for modern computers. It is not perfectly reproduced (particularly irksome is the inability to put weapons or more importantly tractor beams on turrets or to sell missile launchers) but it's pretty good.
