In the next New World patch, we will not only get access to Brimstone Sands and the Greatsword, but also see changes to Umbral Shards. The cost of upgrading items with Umbral Shards is changing with the 600 GS softcap no longer existing and so is the amount of Umbrals you gain from mutated expeditions/dungeons. There is a very effective way to spend shards BEFORE the patch in order to minimize the amount of Umbral Shards you need to get your gear from 590 to 625 gear score.
