The Space Stage is the final stage and you are free to do whatever you want since there is no more consequence mechanic to worry about, you are encouraged to do just about everything since you can obtain badges which not only ranks you up to higher titles, but also unlocks new tools for you to purchase.

The tools range from weapons to terraforming tools to make planets more hospitable for your colonists, but all of this is going to require a lot of money.

Money is primarily obtained through trading spice which is produced in your colonies, many of the planets have different color of spice with each different worth to different colonies (alien or otherwise). You can also find artifacts to sell and plunder enemy ships and cities for some quick cash.

But in order to make a lot of spice you will need to terraform the colony planets by changing the atmosphere and temperature, then stabilize it by placing plants and creatures to create an ecosystem, after which you can build more buildings and colonies the higher the terra score.

You will encounter other alien species whom you can befriend, trade or go to war with, they will each follow a different philosophy which will determine how friendly or hostile they are, what tools they sell and what missions they will give out.

Finally, the Galactic Adventure expansion allows you to play adventures where you beam into planets and go through developer or player created missions, we will see a few of them in this playthrough.
