"Star Force" is a vertical shooter developed by Tecmo (known as Tehkan at the time). Originally released in some arcades outside of Japan as Mega Force, the game revolves around a lone fighter ship navigating through space and floating terrain while under constant attack from enemy ships and land-based targets. The ship's primary weapon is its guns, but a power-up can enhance the firepower, enabling rapid-fire capability.

The game's plot revolves around the year 2010 in Dimension Almanac, with a mysterious planet named GORDESS threatening destruction and plunder across the cosmos. A brave soldier, known as "FINAL STAR," takes on the challenge of confronting GORDESS and ending the cycle of murder and pillaging that has persisted for 2,000 years.

The player controls the ship using a joystick to move in eight directions, with firepower directed upwards. Collecting a power-up called the purser grants rapid-fire ability. The goal is to traverse 25 levels marked with Greek alphabet letters, defeating end-of-level bosses to progress. The game offers various tips and tricks for skilled players to optimize their gameplay and achieve high scores.

Star Force received a warmer reception in Japan compared to North America, where some players found it repetitive, while others embraced its challenging nature. The game was later ported to various popular Japanese consoles, including the Famicom, MSX, Sega SG-1000, and the Sharp X68000 home computer, as well as a mobile phone app. Only the NES saw an American release, where the game was improved over the original Japanese version.

The NES conversion of Star Force boasted graphical and gameplay improvements, enhancing the accuracy of the port over the Famicom version. With harder enemies, distinct coloring for enemies and objects, and subtle sound changes, the NES version provided an improved gaming experience. Additionally, the title screen was altered, and new elements, like the Game Over theme, were introduced. The NES version also featured modified question mark tiles, reflecting changes in gameplay mechanics.
