In today's episode (Ep 10), we begin a complete 12-world run of Star Ghost. This run will feature all 12 star systems in the game - enjoy! We'll be discussing strategy as we go, but we'll also be talking about whatever comes to mind, which could include food, games, media, philosophy, or almost anything. Come downstairs and have a seat with us on the couch right here in The Basement!
Here's an interesting article that came out on the release date for Star Ghost from our friends at Vooks(dot)net (author Steven Impson):
[...]The constant choice between balancing offense and power ups, it’s something that you can gradually become more skilled at each time you play, and it makes Star Ghost one that I kept going back to, even after some frustrating failures.
Star Ghost’s presentation is worth pointing out as well. The whole game takes on a neon aesthetic that had shades of Blade Runner, which while not unique did make for some wonderfully colourful chaos once you’re dealing with large groups of obstacles and enemies. The neon look has another bonus in that it makes enemies really stand out from the blackness of space, so you’ll never feel cheated by a hazard you didn’t see coming. The game’s music also struck me positively. Ranging from some neat cyberspace ambience to action packed electronica, David Wise’s soundtrack (yes, *the* David Wise of Donkey Kong Country fame) really complements the action.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Star Ghost really came out of nowhere and surprised me. What looked like another ho-hum space shooter turned out to be far deeper than I first suspected. As I dug deeper and understood the systems at work in the game, particularly the interaction between the traction and firing systems, I found myself more and more compelled to keep playing and improving on my next run.
With a neon presentation, wonderful music, and a deceptively deep set of gameplay systems, Star Ghost is a game well worth trying out.
