SPACEX STARLINK INTERNET
A LICENCE TO PRINT MONEY

I’ve talked about SpaceX and its CEOs vision, Mars Colonization but also Lunar Base and longer term colonization of entire solar system. However, none of these come cheap and none are possible without massive investments. Although Elon Musk could go and seek investors for his ideas, and no doubt he’ll be able to get few on-board, perhaps even raise $20-30 billion.

Problem is, as alarming this might sound $20-30 billion won’t be enough for what Elon Musk is proposing. Proposed Mars Base Alpha, alone would cost in the region of $20 billion, mostly in cargo missions to deliver engineering equipment and necessary supplies. There’s limit to what 3d printing and tunnelling bots can do.
If we consider each BFR system consisting of Big Falcon Rocket and Big Falcon Spaceship comes at conservative $575 million, and Spacex plans to send at least 4 BFS to Mars, the cost of sending people to Mars won’t be cheap by any stretch of imagination.
So how does Elon Musk plan to finance his Martian Adventure? Well he could go to financiers and investors, but lesson from Tesla might be one of the reason why looking for investors for this particular project isn’t ideal, and most investors want their money back, ideally in short space of time.

Tesla has its own issues, and financially won’t be capable of generating profits on scale SpaceX needs to finance interplanetary expansion, so there must be something else. And yes there is something else, it is called Starlink, and not many people know abut , I’ve made a video about it while back, link in the description.
So what is Starlink you might wonder? Or not, for those who don’t know what it is, here is a brief explanation. Starlink is a satellite constellation that will provide worldwide internet cover with 6gigabit high speed internet service, initially throughout the North America, eventually the rest of the world. The service will be highly competitive and mostly cheaper than current service providers’ offer, but also wireless, most likely based on 4G and 5G infrastructure.

In some places the service will be free, poor parts of Asia and Africa, but it is also aimed at businesses who need really fast, reliable internet service across the globe, and to achieve this amazing feet, SpaceX will launch up to 12 000 small 500kg satellites that will cover entire globe, literally every corner of the planet, even the Antarctica.

In essence, what Starlink will do, is make current internet and communication infrastructure pretty much redundant and obsolete by late 2020s, and if you can imagine Netflix, which has what 140 million customers and is worth over $100 billion with revenue now exceeding $12 billion, imagine that, just 10 or 20 times larger, offering all that plus very fast internet.

This is what Starlink could become within a decade, and it’ll be solely owned subsidiary of SpaceX, literally a licence to print money. And the fun thing about Starlink, eventually it’ll be available throughout the solar system, with network extending to the Moon and Mars as first humans set a foot on Mars, you’ll literally be able to talk to live Martians, albeit with 20-25 minutes delay.

So how soon can we expect Starlink to be operational, well there are no specific dates yet, but Elon Musk hopes to have partial service to North America in early to Mid-2020s, with global coverage sometimes in mid-2020s to 2027. Only question remains, what happens to likes of Verizon and Comcast, who carved up US market in to monopolies, offering appallingly bad and very expensive service, not to worry, Elon Musk to the rescue.
