Sometimes I wonder about the guy in the band who is playing an instrument nobody else can hear (tambourine, maracas, that hollow fish thing you rub with a stick, or the absolute all-time least-effective instrument: the egg-shaker). I mean, when the singer suggests that he be allowed to play an instrument during a song or two and they hand him a tambourine or an egg shaker, how does he not immediately think, "Wow, they don't respect my musicianship at all!" I have seen countless live shows where the band has clearly given the lead singer an instrument that helps him feel included without giving him the ability to ruin their groove. How does he not see right through this ploy? Oh, right. It's because there is no ego-beast more ridiculous than the lead singer. He probably actually does think he's helping. Actually, worse than that, some of these guys must think the crowds come to hear his pipes and his on-point tambourine work, and the rest of the band is just window dressing for the main event: lead singer with tambourine. How could it be anything other than that?
