I made this video to show how the UI in Star Trek Online is incredibly unoptimized, to the point where it cuts my FPS by 2/3rds. Now, my computer isn't the best, and you'll see this if you watch a few of my minecraft videos. But this brings up complications even for the best of computers. An unoptimized UI demands more processing power, even if your PC is quite good and you don't see it in the form of framerate drops. For example, Star Trek Online is no stranger to overheating issues, and this could be one of the causes of that.

This last video shows some of the bigger framerate killers for me. Sitting aboard the quiet and smooth running Deep Space K7, I opened up the Duty Officer window. That drops my usual framerate from 15 to 1. ONE. One frame per second. Even worse is when I go through the whole roster when I need to make room for new recruits.

The character sheet for my character, ship and bridge officers is also a large drain on resources, but not as power hungry as the (admittedly complex) duty officer UI. Same goes for the inventory window. Even clean, empty inventory window, unlike mine, offers little respite from low FPS.
