STORY DETAILS:
The Highland Kingdom is an aristocratic imperial nation formed in year 237, while the City-States of Jowston is an alliance established in year 314 by the three principal states: South Window City, Muse City and Two River City, as well as the Knightdom of Matilda, to serve as a counter balance to the growing powers of the Highland Kingdom.
In the year 428 however, the Highland army, reigned by King Robert Blight, began their invasion of the City States of Jowston, with the wielder of the Black Sword Rune, Han Cunningham leading Highland 1st Army. The Highlanders secured victory over victory against the Jowston army as a result of their poor leadership, resulting in the city of Greenhill, along with the Knightdom of Matilda falling onto Highland's control, granting the kingdom half of the City-States in one fell blow.
The year 432 however saw a turn around in fortunes for Jowston. An army led by Genkaku, the bearer of the Bright Shield Rune, went on what would later be known as the "Great Offensive." They started raiding against Highland supply camps, with Greenhill and Matilda eventually won back. These victories bought enough time for Jowston forces to get organized against the Highland army.
Due to the exceptional skills of both Genkaku and Han however, the war continued in a stalemate. Eventually, a friendship developed between the two, and following the death of Robert Blight in year 434, along with the ascension of Agares Blight, who is a pro-peace king, both sides proposed a truce.
Mayor of Muse, Darell, disagreed with the status of the rich town of Kyaro however, insisting that it belonged to Jowston. King Agares Blight soon proposes a duel between champions to decide the fate of the town.
Han represented Highland while Genkaku suited up for Jowston. As Darell and Agares presented their swords to their respective heroes however, Genkaku refused to fight, accepting defeat without even raising his sword. This resulted in Kyaro town becoming a part of Highland Kingdom, with Genkaku being banished by Darell, and subsequently getting casted out of Jowston as a traitor.
Genkaku lived the rest of his life in Kyaro, opening a dojo and training two war orphans by the name of Riou and Nanami to become formidable martial artists. A year after the champions' duel, Genkaku and Han decided to seal their runes in the shrine at Toto village. Genkaku eventually passed away of old age in year 458.
Two years after Genkaku's passing, a peace treaty between the two nations had just been signed. Riou, along with his best friend Jowy, joins a unit called the Unicorn Youth Brigade. A group of young teenagers led by Captain Rowd, proudly serving the Kingdom of Highland.
