PREVIOUSLY:
Upon arriving at the item store in Muse City, Riou and Jowy learns that the wooden amulet is not for sale, and was only pawned by a store customer with an overdue bill. Jowy convinces the shopkeeper to sell them the amulet by trading his signet ring, an offer that the shopkeeper gladly accepted.
With the Wooden Amulet in hand, the party makes their way back to Toto Village, but were surprised as the whole village is in ruins. They soon find Pilika crying alone, who managed to hide safely through her father's help. A girl named Apple then approaches them, revealing that Luca Blight looted and burned down the whole village just for the sake of entertaining his men.
Apple accompanies Riou and his friends back to the Mercenary Fortress, where it is revealed that she and the mercenary leaders were friends from way back during the Toran Liberation War. She discusses Luca Blight's plans of taking over the City-States of Jowston, and next on his list will be the Mercenary Fortress.
On the nexy day, Viktor and Flik assigns Riou and Jowy to a mission. They are tasked to finding a man named Tsai, the only one that could repair the legendary Fire Spears, weapons that were forged by dwarves many years ago, but have now rusted all over. They find themselves in a small house in Ryube Forest on their search, where they meet The Divine Spear himself questioning their intrusion. Tsai had already heard the news about Luca's attack on Toto village, and had already done the preparations whenever his services would be needed.
Making their way down from the woods, Ryube Village had been in flames as the prince of Highland takes his time slaughtering the villagers. Giving in to their rage, Riou and Jowy attempts to intervene, but were promptly knocked out by Tsai. When the two came to, the Highland soldiers had already left the village.
