You wouldn't believe when I got started on this idea, and in the end it almost didnt happen. The idea of modules and dance tracks seemed to enrapture me at a young age, and even then I'd be massively impressed at what where was in terms of music. Today, with the internet, it's possible to find everything we never had then, and suddenly a whole new world of music opens up! Its like a huge catalogue rare white-label songs from underground Amiga life - quite astonishing when a lot of those are exceptionally good songs, even today.
I'm in to House music at the moment, and planned a bit of a revival on the channel. But after the low number of views on my Dub tracks selection, I canned the album of dance house songs I had been working on as a follow up. I tend to throw a lot of snowballs on the scene - some people get angry, while other snowballs melt, but some gather speed. A long while ago I asked Ravi Abbott about his favourite Amiga modules, and in response to these questions from fans he launched his 8-Bit live mix series. After a superb House mix this year, I went back to the catalogue on rare wonders, and started to collect a second set of songs for a Summer House Mix. Amiga Bill's music inspired me recently also. But when it came to making the mix myself this summer, there was always something putting me off, and I never got around to it.
This week, I got the idea to make a film about Directory Opus, and it seemed incredibly dry without music, so I recorded some mods from both of the house album ideas to use in the background. But they were inaudible, so I ramped up the volume - and this made my narration inaudible - and I couldnt find the right balance I wanted. In the end I decided to just release the music separately, and that became this video.
The songs were recorded with VLC from Mods to MP3s, and then put into the timeline in the order I randomly recorded them. Listening back, I had just enough music to cover the 30mins I needed for the DOpus show, and the order sounded perfectly fine, so I kept it like that. Some songs were faded in to others, but only one section at the end was intentionally mixed. The soundtrack was then split from the video and I made a new cover image for this from the old pop mods online idea. This time I knew I wanted a mix of tracks rather than to separate them, to give more of a vibe going on. I find several of these songs are playing in my head all the time, so why not fall into this enigmatic timewarp with me?
No, I dont think "You cant have House without a Piano" :) - although listening to this you might think so. But I used the piano as a theme for this, like a common element to bind it. I think House is House even without a piano, or anything like that. You can have house played on a full can of baked beans; the vibe still remains. It takes me to a third place, no Britain or America, just a 3rd dimension, and I like to listen to this sometimes with my eyes closed, being taken away by just the sound, without thinking about anything. This makes it different to Rock or Pop or Jazz - its an absorbing world of togetherness and warmth and fun, in the spirit of life and party.
