Now that we've seen quite a few big hitters, for the end of the season I like to include a few lesser known games. There could be either cult favourites, or games which should be good games - but aren't. These last two games fall into the latter category. I've seen screenshots of this, and magazine adverts backing the day, along with Powerdrome, and this really made me want to buy an Amiga. When I finally sat down for a proper try of this, oh dear.
I couldnt find the WDHLoad of this game, and as I used a stock A1200 with ADFs. The graphics seemed smooth enough in a straight line, but the turning of the ship was choppy, like "on" or "off". There seems to be no options to play using the mouse?? This might make all the difference. This left like a budget title, and the difficulty wasnt difficult, its just that with the constant crashing, and corresponding sound effects, it got highly annoying.
The review goes on a bit too long because of this gentle difficulty, so I added some music to try to make the review a bit easier to watch. The first track is not a good one, but I love the original song, and its Take Me To Insanity, after all. I tried quite a few different music tracks, which were originally all ambient future techno in style, but only the ones at the end of the video survived, the rest were all changed to dance and funk songs, with a polka in the middle, before the ambient stuff. I also added title captions for the music tracks, not something I normally do.
Danscore:
In 1989, Electronic Arts were pushing the boundaries with Powerdrome, and by 1991 we had Vroom! This budget title is much easier to play than either of those games, but the frame rate seems to suffer on PAL machines, and I'd guess maybe 15 fps. On NTSC hardware, the screen is (almost) full frame, and slightly smoother, but even then, the controls really let this down. With a joystick the turning is very much all or nothing, and the sudden stops and crashing sounds when you slightly scrape a curb are severally off-putting. The constant screeching is also severally off-putting. Graphics on some racers are lush, while on others it looks like CGA, with two primary colours. Certainly the cyan control panel and Spectrum-esque solid colours and banded road, dont do this game any favours. Longevity is increased with a huge league to get though, but who wants to play this more than once? I'll give it as 5 for all that it is, and isnt, but it could have been so much more.
