A playthough of Capcom's 2002 horror-theme action-platformer for the Nintendo Game Boy Advance, Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts.

This video shows the GBA-exclusive "Arrange Mode" in which many of the Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts stages have been replaced with updated remakes of stages from Ghosts 'n Goblins and Ghouls 'n Ghosts. Since the goddess bracelet can be found anytime after you've found the gold armor, this mode only has to be played through a single time to reach the proper ending. There is no second loop.

Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts was a huge hit on the SNES, and eleven years later, its gameplay still stood up quite well in the shift to the handheld. The game has taken a few knocks on the conversion - the screen is crunched thanks to the GBA's lower resolution, the sound quality (though very good by GBA standards) takes a nosedive, and the slowdown somehow seems even more pervasive than it did on the SNES.

The ability to save your progress and the inclusion of the remixed stages still make it entirely worthwhile to anyone that enjoyed the original, though. The new graphics and remixed music in the arrange mode really shines: a lot of detail and color have been added to the backgrounds for the new stages, and all of the classic original FM music has been given a big boost in being reorchestrated to bring its style in-line with Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts'. The slowdown does rear its ugly head in these stages, though, and some of the fancier effects drag the game's speed to a crawl - I recall the village with the burning windmills being particularly bad for that.

Still, despite its faults, the Game Boy Advance port of Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts is an excellent game. If you're only interested in the core game, you'll be better served by playing the original SNES release (or its port on the Saturn/PS1), but if you loved the original and were left wanting more (like me, masochistic as I tend to be with my games), this is an excellent second serving.

And if you are interested you can find my video of the original SNES game here: https://youtu.be/Bzlu9xJ9ARw
