The Nintendo Entertainment System platform game Super Mario Bros. 3 was developed and released by Nintendo (NES). On October 23, 1988, it was launched in Japan for home consoles. It was released in North America on February 12, 1990, and Europe on August 29, 1991 for North and South American markets. PlayChoice-10 was launched in North America on July 15, 1989, prior to its release on the Nintendo NES. Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka led Nintendo Entertainment Analysis and Development in the creation of the game.
Players take on the roles of Mario or Luigi, two siblings who are tasked with stopping Bowser from capturing Princess Toadstool and the rulers of seven separate kingdoms. With additional skills, including as flying and sliding down slopes, players are able to beat their adversaries in the same way as in past Mario games: by stomping on them or utilizing magical objects. The Koopalings (Bowser's progeny) and a globe map for navigating between levels were introduced in Super Mario Bros. 3 and have since become mainstays of the Mario franchise.
For its hard gameplay, critics lauded Super Mario Bros. 3, which went on to be named one of the greatest video games of all time. Over 17 million copies have been sold around the world, making it the third most popular NES game of all time. The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 was also a short-lived animated television series developed by DiC Entertainment. In 1993, as part of Super Mario All-Stars, the game was remade for the Super NES, and in 2003, as Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3, it was remade for the Game Boy Advance. On the Wii U and 3DS, it was re-released via the Virtual Console service, and on the NES Classic Mini. Nintendo Switch Online re-released it on September 19, 2018, with the addition of netplay.
