River City Ransom is a beat 'em up video game for the Nintendo Entertainment System that was later re-released in the PAL zone as Street Gangs. In Japan, it was first released on April 25, 1989, by Techn's Japan. Technos' Kunio-kun series for the PlayStation 2 was preceded by Renegade and Super Dodge Ball before this game was launched. Before it was released in North America, River City Ransom underwent extensive localization to make it more appealing for Western audiences. American Technos' North American affiliate released it as one of the company's first console games.
The Sharp X68000, PC-Engine Super CD-ROM2, and Game Boy Advance versions of the game have all been re-released (GBA). In 2007, the Nintendo Wii Virtual Console re-released the NES version, and in October 2015, the Nintendo Wii U Virtual Console re-released it. There is a 3DS Virtual Console release date of July 25, 2013, and a North American Virtual Console release date of November 14, 2013. On September 18, 2018, it was re-released on the Nintendo Switch Online service.
