Nintendo's NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) is an 8-bit third-generation home video game device. It was first released in Japan in 1983 as the Family Computer (FC), also known as the Famicom. In October 1985, a modified version of the NES was released in American test markets before becoming generally available throughout North America and other countries.
Nintendo aimed to develop a home video game console after a string of successful arcade games in the early 1980s. President Hiroshi Yamauchi, rejecting more complex plans, advocated for a simple, low-cost system that could play games saved on cartridges. Nintendo's portable Game & Watch games inspired the controller design. Several add-ons, such as a light pistol for shooting games, were released.
The NES was one of the most popular video game consoles at the time, and it helped to revive the US game industry following the 1983 video game crisis. It pioneered the now-ubiquitous practice of licensing third-party developers to create and distribute games. The NES was home to a number of innovative titles, including Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, and Metroid, all of which went on to become long-running franchises. The Super Nintendo Entertainment System followed it in 1990.
