Due to the positive response from fans of the first Samurai Shodown game, SNK reworked the sequel to include nearly all of the original cast, as well as several new faces and improve the overall gameplay with more responsive controls, additional moves (particularly with use of POW meter as a super special move meter; these moves not only cause severe damage to the opponents but also break their weapons), and an improved storyline.

Expanded gameplay included many movement choices, such as the ability to roll forward and backward or duck and hop for low-to-high hits. Using a command delivered at the last second, a player could deflect the incoming attack and leave their adversary open to attack by a fraction of a second in this game's history. In Namco's Weaponlord and later in Capcom's Street Fighter III, a similar strategy was used to great effect. Other SNK characters make cameo appearances, a hidden boss appears from time to time to test players, and there are a number of other surprises for fans to discover.
