Super Mario Galaxy: The Golden Chomp - 82 Coins Collected (Almost Max Coins)
The main challenge in this level of course comes from getting as many coins from the prickly plants while you are invincible as possible. Even with the route I use in this video, I actually still missed two spiky plants that can potentially give out coins, so this coin score isn't perfect in that sense. preon made a TAS that shows how Mario can actually get every coin from the prickly plants! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10CUJNUEElw Maybe I'll try to do it myself someday...
Shoutouts to TheRubyMoon and Golden Block for giving me tips and tricks for trying out this challenge! Cancelling the Launch Star landing animation was particularly useful!
Major credit goes to Dendonodon for finding multiple OOB tricks in this mission that completely break it apart! They allow this mission's coin count to match that of the standard mission's! There's a TON of stuff to mention here, so here we go...
Skipping the second gravity switch is easy. Long jump upwards, but then hold neutral on the control stick, then spin once you get close.
To jump over the large gap with the cannonballs, line Mario up with the middle set of squares, then backflip once the upper cannonball lines up with the lower cannon. At the height of the jump, do a spin and hold down left while also holding the jump and spin buttons to make it across the gap.
To stand on the side of the boxes, simply long jump upwards while holding up left on the control stick, then when you reach the top box, hold up right instead.
This part is weird. You're being pulled by the cylinder's gravity at this spot, and it makes moving Mario really weird because the control stick doesn't move him the direction you might think. For this part, I made Mario fall off by pushing upwards and slightly left. After falling, hold neutral, spin the switch, hold up right to move toward the wall, do a wall jump, then hold up left to move toward the newly activated crates.
Do a standard long jump off to the side of the moving boxes. Do a long jump off of the side of this box by pushing down on the control stick. Once you reach the moving box, gravity returns to normal.
Be cautious when defeating the goombas, because if they are on the lower left side of the top square and then jump when they see Mario, their jump will cause them to get sucked into the cylinder's gravity...
To return, fall on one of the moving boxes, do a long jump down left, wait for the next moving box to come by, jump on this box while pushing the control stick up right, then continue moving that direction and do a long jump. Afterwards gravity will go back to normal and you can do a spin to land on the boxes.
Finally, to return to the saucers, backflip, then hold left until the gravity changes, then hold right until the gravity changes. Repeat this until you reach the saucers.
To return to the golden chomp planet from the saucers, you'll need to do a mega triple jump. To perform it, run straight toward the edge of the yellow saucer while preparing a triple jump. After the second jump, hold neutral on the control stick, and then just afterwards, hold left for a brief moment. This should move Mario just enough so that he ends up on the upper lip of the yellow saucer. Perform the triple jump by buffering the jump button and hold neutral on the control stick to get a mega triple jump! Spin at the apex of the jump to escape the saucer's gravity, then hold down left to make it to the golden chomp planet.
This run missed 2 coins from the first set of cannonballs because it's possible to stomp on the cannonball on the LAST FRAME that it's on screen to stall its despawn, which is just enough time for the third cannonball to get shot, which stores the coin. So those 2 coins are possible to get without Co-Star, but it is very difficult. Maybe I'll do it at some point...?
*This run was done on Super Mario 3D All Stars on the Nintendo Switch
