Super Mario Land was a launch title for the Nintendo Game Boy in 1989 and is one of the most beloved installments in the Super Mario series. It's notable for being developed without the oversight of Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto. This led to some creative differences from the game's design team, such as Koopa shells being bombs, enemies based upon Japanese folklore, and a quest to rescue Princess Daisy instead of Princess Toadstool. Bowser also takes a break from this game and is replaced with Tatanga.
Level arrangement in this game is odd, with only three levels per world and just four worlds in the game (for a total of 12 stages). In this run Draco aims to complete the first loop of the game and defeat Tatanga in world 4-3. Much like the NES Super Mario Bros game completing the first "loop" of Super Mario Land unlocks a harder difficulty (denoted by the "START" icon being replaced with Mario's head instead of a Super Mushroom), however this "hard mode" is not included in the run.
We've featured the NES trilogy in our marathons and Super Mario World has lurked in the Challenge Box for a while. We'd like to incorporate more classic Mario games in the coming years, so Super Mario Land was a great place to start. Enjoy the run!
