Culex is a Final Fantasy-inspired boss that appears in Monstro Town and can be fought at any time you possess the item necessary to do so, but the battle is difficult, so it's best to do it after beating Smithy. In order to reach him, you must buy a Fireworks in Moleville for 500 coins, then trade it to the mole child running the pretend store for a Shiny Stone, which opens the sealed door in Monstro Town to grant access to Culex's pocket dimension.

In battle, Culex is accompanied by the Fire Crystal, Water Crystal, Earth Crystal and Wind Crystal, each of which has their own HP, weaknesses, strengths and arsenals of magic. Culex himself uses Shredder, Meteor Blast, Flame Stone and Dark Star in addition to a basic attack. Only Culex is required to be defeated, as any crystals remaining after Culex falls automatically self-destruct on the next turn.

Culex awards the Quartz Charm upon his defeat and leaves the dimension, causing the black door to disappear.
