I loaded up a 'jailbroken' save which enabled a real time hex editor to the game.
It is possible to adjust simple things including:
timer,
number of lives,
Mario's form and
triggering a stage clear.

Then there is hex editor page FFFF where the correct values can activate some extreme features.
This one is the Telekinesis code by p4plus2, press and hold X + D-pad to move an enemy/object (some do not work) press L/R to change targets.
