Super Metroid Unused Enemy – Stoke (Mini-Crocomire)
Hey, everyone! Many of you are likely familiar with the unused enemies in Super Metroid, including Stoke (mini-Crocomire), Bang, and Reflec. You may have encountered them in hacks. Among the unused enemies, Stokes are obviously the cutest. Personally, I think they belong in the room before Crocomire, so let’s put them there - using "cheat codes".
Could you use SMILE (Super Metroid Integrated Level Editor) to do this? Of course you could. But for those not familiar with SMILE, you can enter the following “cheats” on your emulator instead.
These 16 codes will replace the 2 Cacatacs in the pre-Crocomire room with Stokes, and place them at the locations seen in the video:
A1AA6A FF
A1AA6B CE
A1AA6C 80
A1AA6D 0C
A1AA6E E7
A1AA6F 01
A1AA78 04
A1AA7A FF
A1AA7B CE
A1AA7C 80
A1AA7D 0C
A1AA7E 77
A1AA7F 02
A1AA88 04
B4884D FF
B4884E CE
Now, we can address the Stoke’s color palette. With just the first 16 codes applied, the Stokes will take on the palette of the Nova/Sova enemy, just as the Cacatacs did. To see what I mean, enter *ONLY* the code B48853 07, and the Cacatacs will return to their baseline green color - the code stops them from using the Nova/Sova palette. A similar thing happens with the purple-ish Cacatacs in Maridia – they take on the Zoa enemy’s palette. If you want to see the Stoke’s “original” palette, enter B48853 07 in addition to the first 16 codes – it’s pretty terrible.
Anyway, to make the Stokes take on the palette of some other enemy (besides Nova/Sova), in addition to the 16 codes above, add the following 2, where WXYZ is the desired enemy’s ID:
B48852 WX
B48851 YZ
For reference, here are the corresponding enemy IDs for the palettes I used in the video: Geemer – DCFF, Atomic – E9FF, Mochtroid – D8FF, Pink Space Pirate – F753, Rinka – D23F.
Unfortunately, to give the Stokes Crocomire’s palette, you can’t simply enter Croc’s ID (DDBF) without causing some significant graphical glitches. If you want the Stoke’s palette to perfectly match Crocomire’s, as I did in the video, you’ll need to enter the following 28 codes (yay):
A28914 FF, A28915 7F, A28916 FF, A28917 0D, A28918 BF, A28919 08, A2891A 95, A2891B 08, A2891C 6C, A2891D 08, A2891E 47, A2891F 04, A28920 7E, A28921 6B, A28922 1E, A28923 57, A28924 58, A28925 3A, A28926 71, A28927 21, A28928 CB, A28929 0C, A2892A 9F, A2892B 03, A2892C 3A, A2892D 02, A2892E 76, A2892F 01.
And, you need to add the B48853 07 code that I mentioned above to prevent the Stokes from using the Nova/Sova palette instead.
These 6 codes are completely optional, but they’ll give the Stokes the same item drop rates as the Cacatacs (in other words, they’ll almost always drop Super Missiles unless you’re full on them):
B4F3B6 00
B4F3B7 01
B4F3B8 00
B4F3B9 00
B4F3BA FE
B4F3BB 00
Finally, if you want to replace the Sova/Nova in the pre-Hi-Jump-Boots room with a Cacatac-colored Stoke, as I showed at the end of the video, you’ll need to enter these 10 codes:
A0CF01 6A
A0CF02 9E
A1B3C5 FF
A1B3C6 CE
A1B3C7 78
A1B3C8 01
A1B3C9 C7
A1B3CA 00
B489CB FF
B489CC CE
Thank you *sooo* much to PJ Boy (and everyone else involved in disassembly over the years) for making your Bank Logs publicly available. Would never have figured out how to do this otherwise. :)
Thanks for watching, everyone! Enjoy your Stokes. Cheers! :)
