I use Diddy Kong in Classic Mode for this video, and in this game, he is considered to be in the highest tier out of all non-DLC characters. Diddy Kong is a fast lightweight character, and while he was already a top-tier character in Brawl, he did get some improvements to most of his moves, and most of the top-tier characters in Brawl, like Meta Knight, got nerfed, but with Diddy Kong, it was the opposite with him.
As with Classic Mode, in Rounds 1 to 3, you fight against characters that use default costumes, in Rounds 4 and 5, you fight characters that use alternate costumes, in Round 6, you go up against the Fighting Mii Team, and in the final round, you fight Master Hand, but on a higher Intensity, you fight against Crazy Hand as well, or on a even higher Intensity, you fight against Master Core, the starting form is based on the Intensity.
While Diddy Kong is a top-tier character in this game, he does have some good special moves, but I might as well go over his custom moves in the description, as this is the only game in the series to have custom moves. His neutral special of Peanut Popgun was changed where the explosion if Diddy Kong charges for too long can damage opponents. His custom variants for his neutral special are Exploding Popgun, which charges up much faster, and the explosion damages nearby opponents, and the second variant is Jumbo Peanut, where Diddy Kong fires a large peanut that moves slowly, but it is a lot more powerful. His side special is Monkey Flip, and the first custom variant for that move is Back Flip, where Diddy Kong jumps backwards, and when you press B, he does a flying forward kick, he does not grab opponents with that move, the other variant is Flying Monkey Flip, where Diddy Kong jumps even higher, the kick and grab attacks are weaker. His up special is Rocketbarrel Boost, which was improved in this game, and going over its custom variants, the first one is Rocketbarrel Attack, which deals more knockback, but doesn't fly as well, and the second variant is Rocketbarrel Kaboom, which charges faster and steers better, but it will explode when Diddy Kong hits terrain. Then for Banana Peel, which was the main reason behind Diddy Kong being a top-tier character, but the nerf to that move is Diddy Kong can only have one Banana Peel at a time, and for the custom variants, the first one is Shocking Banana Peel, which paralyzes opponents when they step on it, allowing Diddy Kong to pull off some combos on his opponents, and the other custom variant is Battering Banana Peel, and anyone that comes into contact will be launched upwards.
On the Smash Bros. website for Super Smash Bros. 4, the character reveals were based on the release date of that character's game, usually a Japanese release, but in the case of Diddy Kong, he was revealed to tie in with the international release for Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, making it the first time a character's reveal tied in with a game released outside of Japan.
