I use Pac-Man for this Classic Mode video, and while he also made his debut in 1980, the same year as Mr. Game & Watch, but a year before even Mario, Pac-Man has been around for a long time. I randomize a list to decide who my next few characters will be, the playlist displays the fighters in order of how they are displayed on the roster. Pac-Man's Classic Mode route is Ageless Classic, and his opponents are characters that made their debut on the Nintendo Entrainment System or at least appeared in a game from that console at least once, and are listed in order from their release date.
To unlock Pac-Man, there are many different ways, and one of them is through Vs. Matches, where Pac-Man is the 49th character to be unlocked, and he is the 3rd character unlocked by completing Classic Mode with Kirby or anyone in his unlock tree after Jigglypuff.
As for the opponents, in Round 1, you fight Mario, Luigi, and Donkey Kong, the stage is 75m on Battlefield Form, Donkey Kong uses his classic alternate costume, likely as a reference to the original Donkey Kong game. In Round 2, you fight Duck Hunt on their home stage, and for some reason there is no music that plays when you fight Duck Hunt Duo. In Round 3, your opponents are Ice Climbers and R.O.B., and the stage is Wrecking Crew in Battlefield Form. In Round 4, you fight against Young Link, Samus, Simon, and Pit on Hyrule Castle, and Young Link was picked likely because of how Link in the original Legend of Zelda looked younger than the modern Link, even though Young Link in this game is the Link from Ocarina of Time. In Round 5, you fight Little Mac, Mega Man, and Snake, and the stage is Boxing Ring, and in Round 6, your opponents are Marth, Dr. Mario, and Kirby, and you fight them on Dream Land GB.
Next is the Bonus Stage, and at the end of Pac-Man's Classic Mode route, you fight Dracula, and this is because Dracula is the oldest boss, and he debuted on the NES, and the music is Dwelling of Doom. Dracula is a very tricky boss fight, I would say he's one of the harder bosses to fight against, his second form is easier, but he does jump around quite a lot.
After defeating Dracula, that is the route done, and the music for the credits is PAC-MAN'S PARK / BLOCK TOWN, and you earn the Fighter Spirit for Pac-Man when you complete Classic Mode with him for the first time. Despite Pac-Man's Classic Mode route being themed around characters that appeared or made their debut on the NES or appearing in at least one NES game, Peach, Bowser, Zelda, Meta Knight, Wario, Palutena, Ridley, and the Koopalings do not appear, and if DLC characters count, Piranha Plant doesn't appear as an opponent, but I am listing characters that are in the base game.
