Original Text: Captain Marvel/#Shazam had more dark counterparts than just Black Adam. For today's #SupermanAnalogue, I want to talk about SABBAC, a character that I didn't know about until his revival in Judd Winnick's Outsiders in the 2000s
Despite being a Golden Age character, it's no surprise that he was buried in the Silver Age, what with the Comic Code and all. Rather than God's, he drew his powers from devil's and demons.
Satan - Invincible Strength
Aym - Indestructible Body
Belial - Evil Wisdom
Beelzebub - Flame Powers
Asmodeus - Evil Courage
Crateis - Flight
(Yes I had to look up part of that)
He was a rival for Captain Marvel Jr. and matched him power for power.
A second version is where I discovered the character. A Russian mobster, if I recall, who stole the powers in order to compete in the landscape of superbeings. I am not entirely sure how much he's popped up since, but he's a good alternative to Black Adam.
This was quickly followed up with a miniseries reintroducing the original to the DCU, Superman/Shazam First Thunder.
Anyway...he gets my attention through being a part of the #Shazam franchise plus a cool schtick. I love the flaming symbol on his chest (as I've preferred when the lightning of the Big Red Cheese actually goes down to the skin).
He's sometimes too generically demonic but I love his concept. Would love to see more of SABBAC!
