Supreme Warrior Game Sample - 3DO
Original Air Date: January 9th, 2010
Lol, this game makes me laugh. It's largely seen as a pretty horrible game, but it's actually not too shabby, and an FMV game I like, much less from Digital Pictures, is sort of a feat in and of itself. Without learning the mechanics, the game will seem impossible (especially in the beginning) and you'll be lucky to land one or two hits on your opponent. However, once you understand the system and the things you can do to improve your fighting accuracy, the game becomes something relatively interesting: A first-person FMV fighting game. The Sega CD version of this game is essentially easier and the controls are more responsive (it's easier to land consecutive hits). I don't know about the SCD+32X version (which I own but haven't bothered playing).
In the game, you can block in various ways (though central blocking is what you should concern yourself with), and strike with your palm and feet towards the left, right, and sometimes the center (central attacks DO NOT respond well and can't be done as freely as attacks to the left or right). You go around beating up various Warlords before you fight the mighty Fang Tu, the leader of them all, who is trying to gain the other half of his mask to gain incredible sacred powers.
Not blocking results in heavy damage, timed blocking lessens damage based on timing, and "perfect blocking" (when the screen flashes in a color other than red, in this case, hot pink/purple-ish) restores health and can harm the computer. Hitting an opponent with precise timing can also land a super powerful blow which can even cut into their second life bar. Defending yourself is hard enough, but attacking will seem like a major chore as you sometimes have what seems like a tenth of a second to either attack to the left, right, or middle, with a punch or kick. Even worse, there are many times where the icon is visible but won't hit the opponent when it's active.
Even if you aren't great with your offense, you can snatch victory from the jaws of defeat if you have a good defense. A good way to fight the bodyguards and warlords is to study their patterns and build your defense. You can recover a good deal of health, last longer, and have more time to analyze the opponent's openings. As you progress, you'll get many different items and access to new skills that will make fighting other warlords and Fang Tu much easier. Learning when you can access these special moves will require much practice, as the manual doesn't even tell you what the items really do, nor does it tell you exactly what the special skills do, though it doesn't matter too much.
The game was filmed on location in Hong Kong and takes place in various unnamed places in China, but some things aren't exactly realistic and the movies from when people get hit, etc., is sometimes different from the location they're actually in, or all the people disappear, things of that nature. The picture quality is kinda poor in the Sega CD version (not sure about the SCD+32X version) but in some ways even worse in the 3DO game. Even despite how scaled down things are, they are still terribly grainy and the 3DO is capable of far more in this instance. Fortunately, the graphics didn't have to be too good to play this game. The acting and sound is pretty typical of old martial flicks (kinda cheesy), which I actually find enjoyable. Interestingly, you can switch the spoken bits between English and the more authentic Cantonese language. Overall, this is perhaps a "guilty pleasure". Enjoy.
