You play as Celeste (name subject to change), a half-angel valkyrie who was raised to fight demonkind on behalf of the Elysian Church. Unfortunately, the church itself is corrupt and eventually betrays her. Right before the cardinal kills her, Celeste gets an offer from the very demon lord that she was fighting earlier.

You have a decision to make regardinmg Arowar. On the first prompt with Gaia, you have to answer that you didn't hear anything about the war to lower your corruption, or get on board with the war to raise corruption. After answering you didn't hear anything, you can choose to go to war with no consequence, or you can choose the swamp route to lower your corruption.
In the swamp route, you can skip the war sequence, but you'll never be able to enter Arowar for the rest of the game. You'll need a map from the enemy camp south of Arowar, so defeat Alastar once again to get it from one of his dead soldiers. The swamp is more linear than it looks because some paths disappear when you approach them. It's a pretty boring dungeon overall, though it does allow you to grab some rice.
If you choose to go to war, you'll be introduced to tactical RPG mechanics. Most of your army will probably be from Savia Village, since second-hand gear is easier to accumulate than Food Supplies. You'll still want to bring some slime girls and scorpion girls just to make your side more versatile, though it doesn't really matter because the enemy only has a handful of archers and warriors.
After the war, you'll invade the conference room. Once you attempt to enter the last room the Valkyrie will foolishly attempt to fight Marian by herself (and the slime girl), but it's impossible to win. His last AOE attack always takes priority over guard. The good news is that you get a friendship choice to raise one of your allies' affection, though you'll get a similar event later if you did the swamp route.
You now have access to the city of Arowar, which is actually happier under your rule, assuming you didn't try to raze the city. I was conflicted for quite a while, but ultimately went with going to war. There's apparently enough room for error when it comes to lowering corruption even if I go this route.
Personally, I prefer the war route story wise. It shows how much stronger Marian is, giving us a goalpost to work towards. It also shows that the enemy soldiers at least have enough decency to prevent civilian casualties, giving the conflict some shades of gray.
Finally, DON'T BUY THE BLACK WHIP. You can find one in the next dungeon.
