Lesson Five:
Set-up:
Put the bot center stage, turn Show Stun on, turn Damage and Position Reset on, Set Damage to 0, and turn Jump Reaction to Up.
Exercise:
5.1
Pick up a sword and practice side light, neutral light. This will not be a combo, but you will see that the bot cannot escape by jumping.
5.2
Turn Dodge Reaction to Neutral and Jump Reaction to Off. Use neutral light to push the bot back and experiment with the timing of a side light follow Up. An immediate side light produces an active hitbox on the bot the same frame it loses invulnerability from Dodge. This is called a "meaty" attack.
5.3.
Turn Dodge Reaction to Off and Jump Reaction to up. Pick up a hammer and practice side light, down light, side light. The first side light into the down light is your string, and requires you to be close when you hit the side light to stay in range. You can start with a dash to make the string more reliable and easier to space. After landing the down light you simply combo into side light like you learned in Lesson Two.
Strings will enable you to maximize your damage and force your opponents into unfavorable situations. Whenever you catch your opponent with dodge on cooldown you can punish with a string to get more than a combo would give you. Using proper follow ups will force the other player to dodge away from you. Chapter Two will teach you how to take advantage of those dodges.
