2006, PSP; 2007, PS2. Rating: 2.5 out of 4 stars

After the regrettable Omega Strain, Sony Bend wisely went back to the basics and put the focus back on Gabe Logan and (occasionally) Lian Xing as they deal with a new threat. A terrorist group called Red Section is launching a series of attacks and initiatives to try and acquire a weapon called Dark Mirror. Gabe and Lian go after the group, which has a few similarities to foes Logan has faced in the past. He also encounters a woman from his past, Addison Hargrove, who is connected to this conspiracy.

The game itself is well-developed and puts its usual emphasis on action as well as varied locations. Some of the missions are a bit repetitive and come off as little more than escort missions. Overall, the game plays and looks good and there are some impressive setpieces with the early missions being the standouts.

The problem is, apart from the characters and a few references, there’s something oddly anonymous with Dark Mirror. The story has nothing to do with the Syphon Filter virus and the characters are very flat and one-note, which is a shame because there is potential in the narrative. With a few quick rewrites, this could have starred an entirely new group of characters and no one would have noticed the difference. The story is passable, but it does feel like large chunks of the narrative are missing between missions.

James Arnold Taylor does his best as Gabe Logan, but he is not a great substitute for John Chacon. Some of the dialogue he has to speak is pretty awful. The main villain, Singularity, is around for far too little, wasting what could have been a malevolent character. James Horan always brings the goods.

Dark Mirror is a step up from Omega Strain, but that was mostly because the gameplay is streamlined and more efficient. Overall, it doesn’t match the PS1 games.
