Looney Tunes Playthrough
1992, GB. Rating: 2 out of 4 stars
Developer Sunsoft certainly found its niche with those wacky Warner Bros. cartoon characters. This mixed bag of a platformer has Sunsoft trying a few different things throughout its seven stages as the gamer plays as multiple different characters: Daffy Duck, Tweety, Porky Pig, Taz, Speedy Gonzales, Road Runner and Bugs Bunny. The seven levels aren’t all quite the same and a few require the gamer to flex different muscles. A Gradius-style level starring Porky is the most unusual and might stand out the most.
Taz’s level is essentially a freebie and a prelude to the second half of the game, which ramps up the difficulty. That might not have been a problem if the platforming were better. Jumping is a dangerous exercise and some of the leaps the gamer has to make are not very fair. The boss fights are pretty repetitive and don’t require a lot of strategy.
The visuals are clean and there’s little slowdown, even when the game gets busy, which is quite often. The music, as expected from a Sunsoft game, is solid. It’s over very quick and the general aggravation from the platforming doesn’t quite make it worth a second playthrough. Good for nostalgia and not a whole lot else.
