Taking FLOW Further - What is FLOW THEORY in Game Design? - (Part 2)
What is the best way to keep players in the flow state? A number of ways are discussed in this video. The narrative tension curve is also covered.
The narrative tension curve is the relation between tension the audience is feeling and how far through the plot we are. It is a series of peaks and valleys. A similar concept can be adapted to game design and development to help keep the players in flow by challenging players kill levels in an up and down way similar to the narrative tension curve.
We also cover DDA, or dynamic difficulty adjustment. This is a technique to adjust the difficulty of the game on the fly to help players stay in the flow state. It can help players get pulled from anxiety or pushed up out of boredom.
We finally cover leveling systems and how they shift the responsibility for challenge somewhat onto the player.
Flow theory is a psychology theory that we can adapt in our game designs to create challenges that are catered to the skill level of our players. It is a fundamental theory that every game developer should have a good grasp on.
