Fortunately the rest of the Main Quest is interesting/challenging.

One of my favorite match-ups in the series, though you can't really fight Walter toe-to-toe when you're alone like Asch/Milhaust/Flynn/etc. His penetrate makes it so that he'll most likely attack you before you can stun him because he's as quick as Senel when it comes to fisticuffs.

Walter provides a good example of how to properly use the crossover feature of the game. His basic combo will hit you if you try to pass through him too early/while he's too close, and you won't pass through him at all if you press down too late. You need very accurate timing in order to successfully get by him, and even with practice it can be a bit wonky at times (such as the later portion of this video). He's vulnerable during the window after you pass him up, as well as while casting his many spells, so long and short range eres are useful. I wanted to try and fight close up instead of using Demon Fist for the whole fight, so it took a bit longer.

Out of his spells Spread and Blizzard can't be dodged. A Climax Combo negates either, and a throw can be used for free I-Frames against Blizzard at least. Spread is especially annoying since it's instant and there's the chance he could be casting Aqua Laser instead. Icicle Volt also has a VERY deceptive range, so it pays to make room when you see it coming. As for his physical eres, I'm not sure if it's possible to pass through Wings of Hallowed Doom without catching that first kick, but at least you don't get caught in the full move. He uses Roar of the Sea as his wake-up move, but as a standalone eres it's hard to predict since it's pretty quick. Hallowed Wings and Wings of Slaughter are easy enough to steer clear of.

Overall it's a very technical fight compared to most other rival fights in the series, and it's definitely nothing to just jump into expecting a quick win. Too bad this is the ONLY time you fight Walter, just like the Terrors. Hell, even Vaclav gets a second go.
