New character means some matches for sharing! As always, you can find my friends (well, most of them) on YouTube, so check their stuff out!

Onto the matches, featuring Byleth, the protagonist of Fire Emblem: Three Houses!

Match 1: Garreg Mach Monastery
Fancy that, we have colors from each of the three houses at the school, AND one of Byleth's default. Almost like we planned this out or something! No funny taunts to really synchronize though. Also a shame we didn't get any Three Houses music for this match, but you can't get ALL the stars to align!

So yeah, we're all trying out Byleth and they're...interesting! Fun, but hard to use in a lot of situations. As per Sakurai's words, they're a "distance demon," so they specialize in hitting you from far away...and they hit hard! To compensate though, they're quite slow and many of their moves leave them vulnerable. In a free-for-all situation, their fully-charged arrow from Failnaught is pretty scary! Throughout this session I find we all get hit by it quite a bit, despite the lengthy charge time. It goes on so much longer than you'd expect, so trying to roll or sidestep usually led to getting shot. Just jump! Something Byleth doesn't do too well...

Match 2: Arena Ferox
Fun fact: up until Byleth was added, this was the only Fire Emblem stage from a specific game, as Castle Siege and Coliseum were more generic, or referenced multiple games. This stage is interesting as it constantly shifts around, adding platforms and changing elevations. Byleth seems to excel on flat surfaces, but their superior reach with attacks can let them cheese out some kills by going through portions of the stage!

Match 3: Pilotwings
Alongside Byleth, we received a special Mii costume and an accompanying track from Cuphead! Here's the song at least, but sadly no one seemed up to using Cuphead all that much. An interesting song at any rate, though I don't know if it fits Pilotwings much.

I'll say it again: Byleth hits HARD. Like if they give disjointed hitboxes and a projectile to Ganondorf. I think they also demonstrate why Smash hasn't had a spear user before now...that range is scary! Add to it a fun recovery that'll meteor smash opponents straight down if they're damaged enough and you have a character with a TON of potential...but their lack of speed and mobility is certainly gonna make certain match-ups hard! I wonder how they'd fair against other characters...

One more video from this session, and it'll be at the point in the night where we largely retired Byleth to mess around with everyone else. Crazy to think that two and a half ours of four player matches ended with us not even touching like half the roster...Smash has SO many characters, and we're not even done yet!

You can expect more Smash content whenever the NEXT fighter comes out for sure, but I'd like to...maybe do a bit more before then, but we'll see. Happy Smashing until then!
