Tempest (Arcade): Caught in the Eye of the Tempest
WARNING: This video is Rated R for...Raster!
Time for yet another arcade classic, this time from the masterminds at Atari! Originally released in 1981, Tempest was a game very much ahead of its time in many ways. Not the least of which, was it's use of wireframe graphics, also known as "Vector Graphics", an early proto-form of three dimensional, polygonal rendering, instead of classic sprites. The game also made use of a rotating dial axis, turning a full 360 degrees to fire at enemies, instead of the established "top down" vertical view of games like Space Invaders and Galaxian.
Also, a special shout out to whoever did the fantastic arcade cabinet artwork for this game, as like many "golden age" 80s arcade hits, the artwork was part of what really drew you in and made you want to play.
