Tenchu: Fatal Shadows Grand Master/Assassin Playthrough - Primary Missions (No Commentary)
Tenchu series: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLPO56tlewLYTwdj6QR_XaUzec5843mfDF
The fourth Tenchu game. This is the PS2 version of this game. Unlike the previous Tenchu games, there is only a single story campaign to play through but you alternate between two different characters as you progress through the story. Several missions have an alternate version you can play depending on what you do in the previous mission but it doesn't change the story, the levels or the ending. For completions sake, I did produce two playthroughs to show the alternate versions of each mission.
Grand Master is obviously the best rank you can get as Ayame and Assassin is the best rank you can get as Rin. We're back to stealth kills being required for the best rank as well.
The Kanji system was removed and instead you earn scrolls for successfully stealth killing targets and these scrolls are used to unlock skills between each mission. Unfortunately, as with Wrath of Heaven, almost all of these skills are just tricks rather than actually useful abilities.
Inventory size was cut in half and you receive far fewer items for completing each mission, even if you get the best rank. Enemy density is also very high for the series. It's common for enemies to be placed in pairs and for patrols to overlap with each other. Mission 9 features 6 guards in a single section that all overlap patrols or vision with each other as an example of how dense it can get.
As usual, this is segmented and edited.
I don't show the item screen because I use it as a stop/start point for recording. My items are shown in the bottom right, so this shouldn't matter.
Notes
Ninja armor continues to change your appearance.
Mission 3: I have to kill the guards to get Grand Master. Also, knocking out the boss is optional and done by pressing circle and forward when you're close to it. It changes the cutscene afterward.
Mission 4: Why dart the dog? Shurikens are unable to one shot dogs in Fatal Shadows and Rin's reach is so poor that it's actually pretty difficult to reliably hit the dog without also alerting it for a brief moment which causes the spearmen nearby to detect you.
Amusingly, I could almost always land the melee hit without alerting it while practicing but when it came time to record, it was near impossible. This is a frequent occurrence for me.
Post recording: Maybe you need to hit them in the head to one shot them with shurikens.
Mission 5: Being detected once is required to play The Blind Masseuse otherwise you play What Lurks In The Shadow. In this game, you need at least 400 points to get the best rank. Being seen is an automatic -225 because you lose the not seen bonus, plus another -2 for every second of detection, so it is necessary to kill additional guards.
Mission 7: You can cancel kill animations by pressing circle. It's not strictly required here, even if you're not using items but the timing is pretty precise and you have to wait longer for patrols to line up. I skip the animations to give me some leeway and prevent you from having to sit through several minutes of waiting.
Mission 9: You must kill the Katana wielder during the forced encounter to move on to Flames of Passion.
Mission 11: In order to play the primary version of the final level, you have to let the boss of this mission escape by waiting 1 minute and 30 seconds during the fight.
