Description of Nights Edge from the official terraria wiki:
The Night's Edge is a post-Skeletron broadsword, notable for having the highest base damage of all swords available before entering Hardmode. When swung, the Night's Edge emits fire-like purple particles, similarly to the swords used in crafting it, but the effect is more subtle and does not last as long.

On the Desktop version Desktop version, Console version Console version, and Mobile version Mobile version, a purple aura comes off of the Night's Edge when swung, following the swing and increasing the range at which it can hit enemies. The aura also swings around a second time on its own, further increasing range and even covering behind the player. This aura can break pots through walls, but cannot damage enemies there. If the blade or its aura strike an enemy, a purple flash is created. The Night's Edge is also capable of autoswing.

Once in Hardmode, the Night's Edge can be upgraded into the True Night's Edge.

Its best modifier is Legendary.

Notes
Because the Night's Edge requires the Muramasa, which is obtained in the Dungeon, it is only obtainable after Skeletron has been defeated.
In a drunk world, a Locked Gold Chest is almost always generated above the level at which Dungeon Guardians spawn, and it will always contain a Muramasa. Therefore, it is possible to obtain the Night's Edge before defeating Skeletron.
Although Dungeon enemies do not drop loot before defeating Skeletron in get fixed boi worlds, it is still possible to scout the Dungeon from the outside for a normal Chest or pot generated inside, then break in using a Molten Pickaxe and obtain a Golden Key from it.
The Starfury is suitable for this.
The aura of Night's Edge acts as extension of the blade, it does not have a cooldown or produce additional hits.
Tips
With the Legendary modifier, this weapon can last well into Hardmode.
Its components net 310 in total when sold, while the sword itself nets 4 (29.03% more) when sold.
Despite being considered an upgrade, the Night's Edge has a few downsides compared to its components:
It is smaller than both the Volcano and Blade of Grass;
It has a lower knockback than the Volcano, Light's Bane, and Blood Butcherer;
It does not autoswing, unlike the Muramasa;
It is slower than the Muramasa;
It lacks on-hit debuffs, such as the Blade of Grass's Poisoned and the Volcano's On Fire!.
Note that this can be made up for with the Flask of Poison and Magma Stone, respectively.
However, these downsides can be compensated by its damaging aura produced when swinging, which extends its reach and increases its damage.
Trivia
Before the 1.1 update, the Night's Edge was the strongest sword in the game, although it has been dethroned since. Nonetheless, it is still the strongest pre-Hardmode sword; except on Nintendo 3DS version, where Phasesabers are already available pre-Hardmode.
The Night's Edge is the only item crafted at an Altar that is not a boss-summoning item.
The four swords used to craft it all represent a major difficult pre-Hardmode biome: The Blade of Grass represents the Jungle, the Muramasa the Dungeon, the Volcano The Underworld, and the Light's Bane/Blood Butcherer represents the evil biome.
The Night's Edge is available as a real-life toy, produced by Jazwares.[1]
It appears in Dungeon Defenders 2 as the Phantom's Edge.
The Night's Edge resembles a Corruption-themed sword because of its appearance regardless of the crafting recipe.
It also has a similar look to the Light's Bane, not like the Blood Butcherer.
This is due to the Night's Edge being added prior to the Crimson biome.
The sword's particles contain all of the ones from the swords it is made from: Muramasa (upright cross), Volcano (diagonal cross), Blade of Grass (small bubbles), and Light's Bane/Blood Butcherer (large bubbles).
