This is a retrospective series review of the original series of 8-bit Castlevania trilogy on the NES. I will be taking a look at every permutation of the original 8-bit Castlevania trilogy, including ports of Castlevania released for the MSX, C64, Amiga and DOS.

In my usual style I will be digging into the context, the process and the reasons behind what made the Castlevania series come about.

00:00 Intro
00:24 The Birth of Castlevania
01:55 Castlevania (NES)
07:30 Castlevania 8-bit Ports
10:07 Castlevania II: Simon's Quest
13:14 Haunted Castle (Arcade)
13:52 Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse
16:40 Outro

The original Castlevania trilogy on the NES is a landmark series. A lot of the features laid down in these first games would end up being staples of the Castlevania makeup. The whip, the upgrades, the sub-weapons, hearts, candles - these things would endure for decades as key features of Castlevania games. Even the enemies like red skeletons and medusa heads would end up as iconic bad guys not just in Castlevania, but in the wider aspect of video games.

Konami have released and re-released the original 8-bit Castlevania trilogy a million times. They were released on PC in 2002 and on the GBA in 2004. They’re all on the NES mini as well in the Castlevania Anniversary Collection released on Steam, Switch, Xbox and PS4. If you haven’t played them, these are bona fide quality games mate and are well worth playing today.
