Why I love the Star Wars Expanded Universe
I think the Star Wars Expanded Universe is very special. The Original Trilogy laid the groundwork, but it was the EU which fleshed out that universe and fuelled the fires of my imagination.
The Star Wars films gave us a two-hour window into the Star Wars universe. But the Expanded Universe fleshed out every character, every location.
Long before Rogue One explained who stole the Death Star plans, we had Dark Forces. The EU gave me a window into one of the most evocative corners of Star Wars history.
The Star Wars EU games were my Star Wars sequels. It was the EU, especially the games that let me take that first step into a larger world. To actually take part in the Star Wars universe in a way that nothing else could.
Shadows of the Empire was a massive project to inject a new episode between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. SotE is one of my favourite parts of the EU because this is LucasFilm just fully embracing the creativity potential in Star Wars. Not only did LucasArts expand on what existed in the films, but they filled in the gaps, adding content where nothing existed before.
The Force Unleashed is a fan-favourite for a lot of reasons, not least because of how well it fits into the established continuity. The Force Unleashed is a pretty good example of what I’ve been talking about in this video - it fills out the context of the existing film universe, it adds in new characters and story, and it ties it all together almost perfectly.
Like a lot of older fans, the old Star Wars EU still means a lot to me, and I will always treasure the time I spent in that world. New stories in the Star Wars mythos aren’t taking anything away from that. Nobody is ruining my childhood. The range of styles and the wild creativity is what I always loved about Star Wars, and I’m sure I will continue to enjoy it for many years to come.
Thanks all x
