Final Fantasy VIII was a follow-up to a seminal, beloved, and hugely influential landmark JRPG which defined the fortunes of Squaresoft. It responded to that successful predecessor by setting out to, seemingly, be almost nothing like it. I spent many years resenting it for that.

But let us have a play through it, now, all these many years later, and see if it really was as bad as many Final Fantasy fans seem to think.
