Concord's open beta saw low player counts on Steam, raising doubts about its launch success.
Concord may face challenges against established titles like Overwatch and Valorant. However, a strong narrative could attract players over time.
The beta for the upcoming PlayStation shooter is currently free to play for all players across PlayStation 5 and PC, and will close out on July 21. However, some new data reveals that interest in Concord has been rather low on PC.
On Open Beta launch day, Concord peaked at 2,388 players on Steam. This is separate from the closed beta which occurred a week ago, where you had to actually have the game pre-ordered on Steam to play which peaked at about a third of that. This beta is for anyone. Say that even triples as the weekend progresses, and that’s still under 10,000 concurrent players.
We do not know PlayStation numbers, as those are not available or widely shared. I do not know if betas can show up on PlayStation’s Top 10 games list, but it hasn’t appeared there. It very well may in fact be doing better numbers on PlayStation, but it’s important to remember its other live service hit, Helldivers 2, had a lot more players on PC than console.
The open beta is also…free. One big ask for Concord is that it’s a $40 purchase in an age when almost all of its hero shooter competition is free-to-play from Apex to Overwatch to Valorant, to say nothing of immovable staples like Fortnite.
